The French producer releases a game changer on Avicii’s Le7els label
Good afternoon Monsieur Doray. Your new tune ‘Filtre’ has just been previewed – talk us through the track…
“Hey Dan. This is funny cos it’s a real different track from what I usually do, it was more of a side track that I did for me to listen to as I love French house and all these Daft Punk/Crydamoure stuff. But I thought it would be interesting to put this record out and see how the new “EDM” generation would react. We will have a response to that soon as the track is signed to Avicii’s label “Le7els” and will have a release soon. I’m really happy that Tim and Ash are going in this direction and trying to get the things changing and not simply signing trancy chord tracks like millions of others!”
You have just rocked six parties at Miami WMC. I interviewed one label boss / superstar DJ last week and he explained that the days of doing business in Miami are LONG gong! It’s now just about the party. Do you agree?
“I can’t say it any better!!! A bit sad I guess, music for sure is all about fun, but business and discussing music was making Miami a different place.”
Now that the disco dust has settled somewhat in North America, what are your thoughts on EDM over there now? One high profile producer said to me yesterday he felt that the kids over there were starting to look for a more housier vibe in America now. Thoughts on that?
“I think the same, actually I’m hoping for that! I can see the likes of Luciano and Maceo Plex touring more and more in the USA, it’s a good sign!”
I remember interviewing you a while back and you were reminiscing about the first time you DJ’d in Las Vegas and the crowd just didn’t get it. Indeed one high profile name cleared the floor there last week, so it still happens. How does a Vegas crowd differ to other territories in the States?
“The crowd in Vegas is different every week, it’s like Ibiza but way more commercial. They come to have fun, to drink but also to see DJs, mainly the DJs though that they already know via the radio or the TV.”
What is the current top 10 you are spinning?
“My current top 10 is a mix of this right now: CMLD/Dirty South/Arno Cost/Ferhplay/Sebjack/Hard Rock Sofa/Dannic/Denis Koyu/Rob Adans/Norman Doray
What is coming next from you studio release wise in 2013, we hear this year could well be all about the vocals from your production?
“I’m trying to come to more of a vocal production as I think a track is more complete this way. People needs to sing along and remember it. But I’m really picky and I don’t want to come into cheesy stuff! So lets see…”
Where have been some of the stand out DJ shows for you over the winter?
“Probably the Sunburn Festival in India once again, it was magical! Then some shows in the US were really good like Size Matters at Beyond Wonderland! I remember one special moment at Space on 9th December whenI i played back to back with Fedde le Grand for Art Basel closing…Kinda Epic.”
You once said…”Those huge crowds that we now see at festivals once seemed strange and unfeasible, but the more I have experienced them the more I have grown to love it. What was it about those great expanses of thousands of people that irked you in the beginning?
“Yeah I think it’s true…I have always had more of a club feeling man, even though my music has always been for big rooms or festivals. Now I feel really nice playing at festivals and for big crowds, and playing more and more in front of them make me appreciate them even more.”
Where are the big festivals you are looking forward to this summer around the world?
“Can’t wait to be back at Creamfields again this year! It’s always special and I love it! Would love to do more festivals in the USA though, so I’m waiting to see whats going on!”
Have you cemented your Ibiza plans for 2013 yet – are you a fan of the white isle?
“Yeah a lot of pretty nice things are in the making and yes I have always been a big Ibiza fan! I love the atmosphere there, love the people and the weather obviously…”
Who are the producers from around the world that you are giving high fives to right now?
“Many to be honest as I’m listening to a lot of music. I like these Norwegian guys who remixed Something to Believe in with Nervo, Carl Louis & Martin Danielle. I also like this new young guy from the Prydz camp called Fehrplay! Nice 80’s sound mixed with electro beats.”
And finally, back to Miami. Which DJ out there always parties the most at WMC…?
“I used to be the ONE for that hahaha – but now I’m touring so much now that I need to concentrate my energy…So I would say NERVO! They never stop, they are everywhere hahah.”
