Reebs

They are never going home!

Interview by Dan Prince

Leo, Joe welcome to DMCWORLD. Where on planet earth are you right now?

Hi Dan! Now we’re in our beautiful hometown, Lecco!!

The best bit of new music you have heard today?

We’ve just started the day by hearing an amazing remix by our friends OOVEE on Delayers’ track “Let It Go”

As you say, you hail from Lecco in Italy, a beautiful place that was recently voted Alpine Town of The Year. How on earth did you catch the electronic music buzz – how old were you and who were the artists that influenced you?

We started DJing for some parties and clubs in our city when we were young, Leo started in 2004 and Joe in 2011. We each had experience individually in music production. Then we started playing and making music together, so we decided to start the project Reebs. We’ve been influenced by a lot of different artists and styles, especially electro, progressive and dubstep. But we’ve always loved every style of electronic music. We’ve also experimented with other music genres like pop, rock, and so on.

A really exciting time for you at the moment thanks to your new EP coming out on Nameless Records this week…

Yes our ‘Never Go Home’ EP is coming out this week on Nameless Records, we had vocalist Nomi on the title track which is more pop-dance orientated. Then we collaborated with SLVR on the B-side ‘Thaanam’ which is a heavier trap number!

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend…

Kharfi – Hey Bae

Awesome track and vocal: we love what this guy is doing right now!

Goja – Mosh Pit

Fast BPM, amazing vocal on the build up, huge drop: pure energy.

Atik – Through Walls

The extraordinary sound design both on the drums and on the lead sound make this track really fresh and innovative.

That Poppy – Lowlife (Slushi Remix)

In our opinion Slushi is one of the best artists around nowadays, especially due to the great melodic arrangements he makes: this track is the proof!

Graves & Coolights – Say Things (Crankdat Re-Crank)

We think this is one of the best trap songs to be played right now: the drop works really well on the dancefloor.

The Nameless Music Festival must seem but a distant memory now, what were some of your highlights – it was an insane line up!!!?

NMF was amazing, the best festival in Italy without a doubt. We played the last day and it was a really great experience for us, especially because that day there was the best line up according to our personal taste, with great artists that we love like Snails, Yellow Claw, etc. The line up was amazing on the other days too, and we spent a lot of time with friends and other DJs, sometimes talking about music backstage and sometimes jumping together in front of the huge NMF mainstage.

Er, the after-party looked a riot!!!!!!!!! What was all that about?

The second day at NMF we put a DJ console in one of the dressing rooms, so when the festival closed at midnight we played with some friends and other NMF DJs. Everyone came down and people working at the festival partied with us. We did the same on Day 3 because it was such as success, and pretty fun too!

What is coming out next from you studio wise?

Well, we’ve been working on loads of different styles of music, from electro/bass house to trap music, from hard beat to melodic stuff. Now we’ve just arranged 2 original tracks and we’re working on a remix too. We also have a few tracks ready to be released but we’re still planning all the logistics.

How does the studio partnership work, who is great at what when making a track?

Most of the time we work in our little studio we’ve built inside Leo’s home. Sometimes we start arranging a track together, and sometimes we work on some drafts we’ve made separately. We’re both good at arranging music, and working on sound design. A few years ago we started improving our technical skills too, especially in mixing and mastering, so we’re able to finish a track 100% by ourselves now.

It is your joint birthday party. Who are the 2 DJs you invite to play?

That’s really hard to answer, there are a lot of DJ’s we love so it’s difficult choosing only 2 of them, but we think if someone had to play at our birthday party it would probably be one of our friends from the new Italian dance scene, or maybe all of them together, why not!

When was the last time you had a dance to a DJ?

We think the last time we had a really good dance to a DJ was at NMF when Snails was playing: absolutely amazing!

A tip for the anthem of the summer?

Well, we’ve heard a lot of pop dance music recently and we still don’t know which one will be the anthem of the summer. We certainly think the key for making a summer anthem is a great vocal with an easy and enjoyable lyric, a catchy lead melody and, for this year especially, a slow but groovy drum line that makes people really dance when the song drops.

And finally, what 1 piece of advice can you offer to the thousands of aspiring producers/DJs wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Nowadays it’s pretty easy to start producing music as a hobby (there’s a lot of software and great tutorials online), but we know it’s really difficult doing it as a job and becoming a great producer. We think if you want to do it full-time and become someone in the dance music scene, you have to work hard on your personal sound and always try to make something new: everyday we hear a lot of tracks made by young producers, some of them are really great in music production, they have a lot of technical skills, but they often spend (or waste!) time doing something already done by the best producers in the world. So the key is don’t try to make the same thing as others, but try to make your own sound and style and maybe even a new genre!
