Sam Feldt

Interview by Dan Prince

Sam a huge welcome back to DMCWORLD. What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after crawling out of bed?

Hey guys, thank you for having me again! The first piece of music I heard when I got out of bed today was a new demo I got sent by a vocalist that wants to do a track together! Sounded really promising, so who knows what will come from that!

Right let’s get into it. You tried to get signed to Spinnin’ for years and never got any response. What changed for them to get your signature on the dotted line?

In the past, still working under a different artist name, I had always tried to make the “next Beatport hit” or make something that I thought a specific label would sign. That never worked. When I let that all go and started making music for myself (and started Sam Feldt) is when I actually got signed. So my advice is: when you make something that is genuinely close to your heart, others will like it too and the success will follow.

Your best ever festival experience?

Coachella. Such an amazing festival and crowd.

What famous actor would you most like to see play you in a film?

Bradley Cooper

Are you content putting out singles and EPs or is there an album ready to burst out?

I have a lot of new music that’s waiting on a release. Right now the best strategy I think is to push the more radio oriented songs as singles over the next couple of months and then combine the more indie and alternative tracks into a mini album or an EP at the end of the year, just like I did with the Been A While EP. I might work on an album in the future, but I really like how my tracks have been released and promoted in the past.

A summer anthem from 2016?

My own track, Summer On You of course! Haha, just kidding! Beautiful Life by my buddy Lost Frequencies.

Apart from your tunes and your mobile phone – 3 items you’ll definitely be taking to Creamfields?

My Sam Feldt LIVE experience with a band setup consisting of a live trumpet & saxophone player, lots of energy and hopefully sunscreen.

Why is Creamfields regarded as one of the best festival on the planet? What makes it so good?

Easy, it’s just a legendary name in the festival industry. It’s been around for such a long time and all around the world too. In the early days of it, it was definitely a pioneering event in the electronic music scene. I’ve played there last year for the first time and the vibe is just insane.

The last time you danced to a DJ?

Yesterday in Ibiza during Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s set in Amnesia.

An Ibiza moment you will never forget…

Bringing my mom on stage during my set at Ushuaia last summer.

What is coming out next from you studio wise?

First up, there’s the club mix of Summer On You with Lucas And Steve! I’m really excited about that release because the radio edit is doing extremely well already, getting radio airplay all over Europe. As my next single I have a collaboration planned with the guys from Deepend (from the awesome Catch and Release remix) that is called Runaway. It’s coming out end of August. Then there’s another single in the works with Cheat Codes & Alex Schulz scheduled for later this year. Lots of new music to look forward to!

The last time you lost your temper?

During this extremely busy summer tour that I’m in right now, I cherish the moments I can be at home and sleep in my own bed even more. Recently, I thought I had one of these moments planned for the next weekend, but my tour manager thought (rightfully so, in hindsight) that it would be relaxing to spend another day in Corsica, where I would have a show the previous night (so I wasn’t able to go home, freshen up, do laundry and repack my clothes). That stressed me out quite a bit, but no longer than 15 minutes to be honest. I believe you best live your life not by controlling what happens to you, but controlling how you respond to it.

The best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Have fun, and the rest will follow.

An up and coming producer to watch out for this summer…

Lucas & Steve! Aside from the single we have together they have been pushing out so much quality music!

The 3 big tunes in your box this weekend…

The Chainsmokers – Roses, this might not be something you would expect in a Sam Feldt set, but I recently started closing off my sets with this one (in the The Him remix) and there is just so much energy behind this track!

Sam Feldt x Lucas & Steve – Summer On You (Club Mix).  I’ve been playing it in my DJ sets for over 2 months now. So much happy vibes in the breaks and energy in the drop: one of my favorite tracks to play right now.

Justin Timberlake – Can’t Stop The Feeling (SJUR Remix), this one ALWAYS works. I really love how my buddy SJUR made this poppy track into a future house club tune.

From your family – who loves your music and who hates it?

I’ve never heard about anyone in my family hating it, haha. Both my parents and my close family are really supportive and often come see me at my shows. Of course, my mom isn’t a big fan of the fact that I’m away from home a lot, but music wise she’s one of my biggest fans.

We are in the middle of The Olympics in Rio. If you could win a gold medal in any sport, what would it be?

Table Tennis, nerdy huh?

Yup. So, Cream. Merseyside. You go to the derby. Who do you support, Liverpool or Everton…?

None, I’ll just have a beer and watch people lose their sanity over some guys kicking a ball around.

Ooh. No need for that Sam! The biggest risk you have ever taken in life…

After school, dropping everything, not finding a normal job and focusing 100% on music.
