Sander Van Doorn

Dan Prince speaks exclusively to the main man as ‘Ten’ tears it up

Welcome back to DMCWORLD Sander, what a start to 2013 you are having with the impending release of what people are calling the biggest record of the year – ALREADY!! ‘Ten’ even comes complete with artwork courtesy of Maxim from The Prodigy. Great stuff. So talk us through the history of this awesome track and how yourself, Karl Hyde and Mark Knight pulled all this together. Who’s idea was it for starters?

“The idea to make a track together with Mark was there for a long time. When I was working on a track that sounded a bit techy I decided to send it over to Mark. He liked it and start working on it too. When we were thinking of a good vocal for the track, Karl Hyde’s name popped up and we decided to use his voice as it has that same dark mysterious vibe as the music of the track. We liked to have some special artwork for the record and reached out to MM (Maxim from The Prodigy) and he’d like the idea and so a new release was born…”

The track hit No. 1 in the world famous Buzz Chart – that was some birthday present! How did you celebrate both occasions…?

“Yes that was amazing news!! My biggest birthday present was a whole day in the studio!! I have been touring a lot the least few months and it felt so great to be back in my studio to work on some new work. So I spent that whole day working on a new track…loved it! I celebrated my birthday last Sunday with friends and family.”

This is your first release on Toolroom Records – have you been a fan of the label over the years?

“Yeah I play several Toolroom releases for years now – I like what their doing.”

Where was the first time you played the tune and what was the reaction…you must have known it was going to be immense?

“This was at Tomorrowland – Everyone went crazy! So the track definitely passed the road-test! It’s nice to see that people recognize my sound even if they haven’t heard a new track before.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

“Of course my own tracks I still play every show:

Nothing Inside

Joyenenergizer

‘Ten’ ft. Mark Knight & Underworld

Cedric Gervais & Borgore – Deception

DubVision – Redux

Sidney Samson – Move

Rune RK feat. Andreas Moe – Power Of You And Me (Teacup) (Michael Brun Remix)

Hard Rock Sofa & Dirty Shades – Collapser

Tube & Berger – Imprint Of Pleasure

You were spinning in the US last week. Now that the disco dust has settled somewhat in North America, what are your thoughts on EDM over there now? One high profile producer said to me yesterday he felt that the kids over there were starting to look for a more housier vibe, which reminded me of when hard house took over the UK at the end of the 90s then suddenly funky house appeared again…

“I think it’s like the upcoming of Grunge in the 90s, it was a whole new genre with new artists that made the kids jumping and dancing in the clubs. It’s the same with Dance music, that has been popular in Europe for nearly two decades…and now has reached mainstream North America. And also in Dance music, there’s such a variety of styles – it’s great to see that is been picked up by the US now too. It’s actually amazing to experience that vibe when a new energetic sound hits the clubs and people love it. I’m very thankful I can be a part of this.”

Tell us about your experiences at Ultra in Chile and Buenos Aries last week. Mental right?

“Yeah it was awesome – Mental is definitely the right word!”

What has been your best show over the winter months?

“There were many good shows actually! But I remember New Years Eve at Pacha New York very well, a great club with an amazing crowd. Hope to be back there soon!”

What are the next plans release wise from the master Sander Van Doorn? Is there any Roc Nation news?

“The release date of Nothing Inside on Roc Nation is still pending – but we’re looking at this summer, – and my next single will be announced very soon on my Facebook page! It’s another collaboration with a producer duo signed by my record label.”

What are your plans for Ibiza 2013?

“Still working on it, but things are looking good!”

Your Identity Radio show goes from strength to strength. Each week you ask your fans for requests. Two questions, what is the most commonly asked track at the moment and what is the worst track someone has asked you to play them?

“Well, over the past episodes loads of people requested ‘Ten’ and I must admit, I’m lucky: my fans have a good taste… I actually never see horrible track requests.”

Some producers find it impossible to work on music whilst on tour – you however have no problems at all with this?

“I always make some set ups when I’m on the road – but I always finish my tracks in the studio for mixing and mastering. It’s great to work on a laptop, when I have good inspiration for a new track I never have to wait ’till I get back to my studio, but can start right away. It definitely helps to be more productive!  And however I love touring,  it’s alway a pleasure to come back to studio and lock myself up for a week to finalize the drafts I made on the road.”

Who are the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment?

“Julian Jordan, Dubvision, Firebeatz, Umet Ozcan and Lazy Rich.”

And finally, Miami WMC is around the corner. Where will you be playing and what are you looking forward to the most about dance music’s craziest fortnighty of dancefloor action?

“I will play UMF both weekends, I have my own party at LIV on Friday March 16 and I play at the Spinnin’ Sessions poolparty on Wednesday March 20 at Nikki Beach! Really looking forward seeing everybody again! Mainstage at UMF will definitely be BIG!”
