Exclusive interview with the queen of Ibiza
Interview : Dan Prince
Hey Tania welcome to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you right now?
“Hi Dan, thanks for having me on this feature for DMCWORLD. At the moment I am at home in Ibiza.“
You have the UK clubbers rubbing their hands in glee again, this time with the news that you will be appearing at Egg on New Years Eve for The One alongside Cassy, Waff and Pirupa. What is it about playing in London you love?
“Well I have to say, it is always a good vibe in London. The people go out to have the best time and that is nice when you are a DJ. I can feel the energy of the crowd while I’m playing and it is a fantastic feeling.”
There must be a lot of familiar faces on the UK dancefloors you recognize from Ibiza every time you play? People love you in Britain!
“Yes there are always people that have been in Ibiza for the season or just for a holiday and it makes me happy to see familiar faces around whether from the crowd or in the DJ booth.”
Okay let’s rewind for a moment and check out how your amazing story began. Your family fled from Uruguay to Chile to escape the military dictatorship. Just how bad was it back then for you all, how strict were they?
“Well I was a baby when all this happened but I know it was hard times for my parents. They were escaping because of the fact that they thought differently. After Chile we stayed for 1 year and it was time to escape again from the dictatorship of Pinochet and his army. We then moved to Argentina but unfortunately the same thing happened there 3 years later. So you can imagine, arriving in Sweden 4 years after fleeing Uruguay – it was as if we went from hell to paradise in an 18hr flight.”
You ended up in Sweden of all places where your musical journey began when you learnt to play the flute and guitar and started to wade through your parents vast vinyl collection. Who were the artists that your parents were into back then that would fill the Vulcano home rooms?
“My parents had an amazing vinyl collection with all sorts of great music spanning from the classics such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd and a variety of folk music from all over the world. There was no time to get bored. My brother and I used to sit there and listen to all this beautiful music and take in the amazing sounds and melodies as well as the great artwork that came with this music.”
A great quote from you…”I always knew DJing was a good thing. To do something you like with your life and get money for is like winning the lottery.” When did the idea of becoming a DJ start to form in your mind?
“I started thinking of DJing when I came to Ibiza and first set my eyes on two turntables and a mixer. At first it was more a case of curiosity and I wanted to experiment and try something new. It all started relatively slowly when a good friend of mine Jelle lent me the equipment for the winter.”
“Being famous is my worst nightmare” you once said. Being in the public eye so much, making people dance all over the world, being a showman – surely the fame thing is something you knew you would run into sooner or later?
“Yes I did indeed say this in an interview but I have to say that it was completely misunderstood from the people conducting the interview. I was not talking about myself specifically. I was talking about the really famous people like actors and big celebrities. And what I said was that I would like to have this ‘famous’ life that so many people look for – simply stating that this is not how I would like to live (ie: in extreme fame).”
The whole Circoloco adventure began when Andrea and Antonio moved to a tumble down DC10 after their house parties were raided by police. All your friends told you to stay away telling you nobody would go to a club on a Monday morning! They were wrong! What were your first thoughts of the venue in the state it was in?
“Well the club was a bit damaged and worn down but even from the first Monday it was open the people were there dancing and for me it was wonderful even with the bad sound system and other negative aspects. But when the summer came, everything started to change for the better.”
True or false? You hate mixing club CDs?
“It is not that I hate mixing club CDs, but when you make a CD it takes time and effort to compile a list of records that you personally would like to include. I feel it sort of limits me and confines me to have to make the tracks fit into one CD. It is not easy but I don’t hate it.”
The island has changed so much in recent years, millions of Euros have poured in creating new venues, hotels and bars. Are you happy with the way the island is heading?
“I have to say it…I used to like Ibiza how it was a few years ago…but it’s silly to always think about the past. It’s the way it is and you can still find spots where you feel the real nice Ibiza. For me living here is like living in Paradise, especially now when the season is over.”
And finally, who is your favourite DJ to play alongside at DC10?
“My favourite DJ to play alongside at DC10 is…CASSY!!!
