The Wideboys

The UK legends addicted to bass

Welcome to DMCWORLD boys.  Ed, you’re big into your martial arts, Jim you’re a bit of a rallying dude and gym freak. So how have you been enjoying the Olympics, what have been your highlights?

“Definitely the highlight for us has been the British Public coming together in Unity and really supporting the British athletes and the games. Involving music, sports, dance and good vibes is definitely a winning combination.”

What event would you both liked to have a crack at?

Ed –  “100 metres.”
Jim – “Womens Syncronized Swimming.”

You live down on the south coast in Portsmouth. A question I have asked a few producers and DJs this week, why is UK clubland so shit at the moment compared to the rest of the world? We used to be the envy of everyone…

“There are still lots of incredible nights in the UK you just have to search a little harder to find them but hey that is how it was back in the day anyway. People are being more choosey with what they spend their money on so some great nights do suffer with poor turn outs but on the whole we have seen positive uplift recently especially over the Summer months.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning out in clubland?

Zedd – Spectrum
Porter Robinson – Language
Majestic – Lets Go Back – Wideboys remix
Wideboys – The Word – Cause N Affect remix
Dream – This Isn’t House
Russ Chime – Back 2 You
Drumsound & Bassline Smith – Thru the Night
Nicky Romero – Toulouse – Majestic Edit
Wideboys – Addicted 2 The Bass – Tantrum Desire Remix
Project Bass ft Death Rose Cult – Krakken
Knife Party – Sleeze ft Mistajam

Your ‘Addicted To The Bass’ track has been smashing the dancefloors up these past few weeks, a massive tune for the summer. What is coming next from you studio wise…

“We are working on our album at the moment and its getting very close. We are hoping to get it out for the Winter. We have been working on 3 different single options and are just doing some swap production with Owsla artist Nick Thayer.”

What can you tell us about the album? How has the roadtesting been going?

“Amazingly. We have been dropping some fresh material in our club sets and gauging responses over the last few months. Eden Ibiza got a battering the other night.”

How long as the album actually taken to complete?

“15 years lol.”

What vocalists have you featured on the album?

“Majestic, Amy Pearson, Clare Evers and some surprise special guests!”

You happy with it?

“Over the Moon. It is something we have always wanted to do but it had to be right.”

Your Ministry of Sound Addicted To Bass CDs have sold millions over the years. You are in the company of some great artists at MOS…

“Yep, Ministry have got Jag Skills, DJ Wire, Cut up Boys to name a few. All who are smashing it across the board and MOS are one of the most successful and long standing contributors to UK and the International Dance scene. Nuff said.”

A few years ago we spotted you DJing and you were using a mixture of vinyl and CDs, what is your DJ set up today?

“At the moment we are using a combination of CDJ, Serato, Denon 1000, Ableton, Memory Stick products. Dependent on the gig. Our poor Vinyl’s are staying indoors these days.”

How has Ibiza for you in 2012, you’re on your way to RocknRolla at Eden tonight…

“SICK SICK SICK. Rock N Rolla is an amazing event to play at and we will be doing a lot more with them over the next year. Catch us there for the closing parties in September!”

Have you had a chance to check any other clubs out in Ibiza this year?

“We went to an awesome pool party last Friday before Eden and caught Cause N Affect, Alex Schmitz and Rob Tissera. Due to other gig commitments we had to pretty much fly in and out again.”

What has been your anthem of the summer?

“Porter Robinson – Language is so so big! Game changer.”

You once said…“We have always been addicted to music with big grooves and big bass frequencies and we are not the only ones!”. What was the record that changed your lives?

Ed – MAARS – Pump up The Volume    Jim – Kraftwerk – Tour De France

Who are your big mates on the garage scene that you hang out with?

“MJ Cole, Agent X, Artful Dodger, Timmi Magic, Qualifide are all good friends we really respect.”

Tell us about any new additions to your studio this summer?

“Komplete 8 got a bring in this Summer.”

Who brings what to the production process, who excels where?

“We are both team players but very Yin & Yang. We can both do pretty much anything in the studio and both play keys. But our strongest points are…
Ed – Vocal writing and recording     Jim – Production, Mixdown and Mastering.”

How important to you is your radio show?

“Very important as we get an amazing platform to showcase the tunes we love. We recently had the RAJAR figures back and our show was the most listened to show in London on a Sunday night at 10pm across the whole FM DIAL!”

Who are the producers from around the world are you giving high fives to at the moment?

Outside of dance music, who are the artists you are listening to at home or on the move?

“Mozart, Beethoven, Queen (been learning Bo-Rap on piano)…Jazz Fm”

It is not uncommon for you to be given a few days to turn a remix around for a superstar. Do you find you work better under pressure like that…?

“Yes we like pressure in the studio it helps us get our best material out. Deadlines have a great way of focusing you…”

So we come back to yours after the club, what is the Back To Mine playlist you spin us to carry on the groove…

“Anything by Todd Edwards, Chic, Funkadelic, Teddy Pendergrass, Spiro Gyra, Elgar, Depeche Mode, 80’s synth work outs, 80’s power ballads! It would be a crazy session, believe!”

So you have ticked Beyonce off the remix list. I know Busta Rhymes is still there, but who else are you still itching to work with?

“Stevie Wonder???”

And finally, can you tell us about your new remix competition…

“Yes, we are currently running a remix competition to uncover new talent on www.soundcloud.com/wideboys
