Theo Kottis – NUBREED #11

In keeping with GU’s reputation for delivering timeless DJ mix albums, ‘Nubreed #11: Theo Kottis’ explores the deeper, more expansive side of Kottis’ sound, and features a 30-strong tracklist including cuts and remixes from Henrik Schwarz, Agoria, Mathew Jonson, KiNK, Kiasmos, Ian Pooley, Mr G, Kornel Kovacs, Space Dimension Controller and The Horn. In a world where everyone and their dog is dropping livestreams, this mix is the antithesis of disposable DJ sets – expertly selected, beautifully mixed, and mastered to perfection, it’s an entirely different listening experience…

Theo, welcome to DMC World. Where in the world are we catching you today?

Currently in London before a manic few days gigging around the UK.

What’s the best piece of music you’ve heard today?

Morgan Geist – Pushed (Mark Broom’s 2018 Re-Touch)

Who’s the best new artist you have heard lately?

Brame & Hamo

Massive news about being signed up to curate and mix the next Nubreed album for Global Underground. How did that come about?

A few good conversations, a great meeting with Andy (who runs Global Underground) and here we are!

Tell us about the feel and flow of your Nubreed album?

All the tracks chosen have played a part in my journey as a DJ in the last 2 years. With each track, I can recall a specific memory where I’ve played or danced to the track. I could have approached the mix by trying to select the newest music but I felt the best representation of myself is to look back into my music collection. CD1 is more club focussed and CD2 is on a more mellow vibe.

This album is coming hot on the heels of your artist album ‘Beautiful Strangers’. Would you say the mix album dovetails musically with your new LP?

Definitely, my track “Moonlight” from Beautiful Strangers is included in the mix.

You came to prominence as resident DJ at Edinburgh’s Fly Club and Glasgow’s Sub Club. Where did it all begin?

It all started in Edinburgh at Fly Club and I have been fortunate enough to feature on some incredible Sub Club lineups!

Producing tracks for Get Physical, Moda Black and Sasha’s Last Night On Earth is a major achievement. What are your release plans as aside from the compilation?

Beautiful Strangers is the first in a trilogy of albums, so expect much more original music from me.

You have received props from artists as varied Joris Voorn, Kerri Chandler, Sasha, B-Traits and Monki. Would you consider collaborations?

Yes, definitely. I’d love to work on a collaborations and especially with a vocalist.

Who would be in your DJ producer dream team?

KiNK / Henrik Schwarz / DJ Koze

Tell us something about your 3 favourite tracks on Nubreed #11?

Sascha Funke – MZ – Played this in nearly every set in 2017

DJ Assasin – Face In The Crowd (Intellidread Mix) – Guaranteed floor killer, played it in Edinburgh before Seth Troxler.

Ian Pooley – I Got You (Matthias Vogt Remix) – I played this one warming up for Nicolas Jaar at the Sub Club and the reception was incredible, a memory for life!

Obviously artists who’ve scaled to dizzying heights have graced Nubreed before including Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg, Lee Burridge, and Satoshi Tomiie. Do you have a favourite GU album.

Lee Burridge – GU 24:7 – Lee Burridge is the man.

Okay – 5 big tunes that are in your box for the weekend?

Basement Jaxx – Good Luck feat. Lisa Kekaula (Butch Remix)

Josh One – Contemplation (King Britt Funke Remix)

CJ Bolland – Camargue (Original Mix)

Jorge Savoretti – Musica Del Espacio

DJ Nori – Happy Sunday (Maurice Fulton mix)

And finally, what is next on the agenda for Theo Kottis as an artist, DJ and producer?

Lots of touring & working on my 2nd Beautiful Strangers album!
