Trainspotting With Rinzen

Producer/DJ and ‘huge sci-fi nerd’ Rinzen finally drops his ten-track debut concept album, ‘Bend to the Light’, out now on This Never Happened. For this special release, the half-Japanese Los Angeles producer takes inspiration from a cyberpunk aesthetic, crafting his LP in a near-future high-tech world of interplanetary travel/civilisations, where all that glistens hides darkness … ‘Bend to the Light’ explores connotations of bending to the universe (spiritual), bending to an authoritarian future government (dystopian), and making decisions that bend towards the light (idealistic), since this new world has the human emotional problems, joys and relationships we deal with now.

Releasing on This Never Happened, mau5trap, Bedrock, LNOE, Desert Hearts…, Rinzen’s brand of melodic House and extended DJ sets at Stereo Montreal, Elsewhere Brooklyn, Ultra Music Festival and Sound LA have won him loyal fans. DMCWorld grabbed his Trainspotting picks to celebrate the new release.

So I’ve just released my debut album Bend to the Light. I’ll be going on tour to support it this weekend and this is one of the songs I’m most excited to finally play live.

Dyzen – She Likes – Habitat

I really like what Dyzen is making these days, and this one just dropped on Mind Against’s label. It feels like a nice blend between afro and melodic techno, and the vocal + chords is just a great combo.

Tim Engelhardt & Sean Doron – So Good – Siamese

Big one here from Tim Engelhardt & Sean Doron which just came out on Adriatique’s Siamese imprint. The vocal reminds me of something the Chemical Brothers might use, which I love.

Madben – Murky Soul – Atlant

I’m always interested to hear what Madben cooks up, and his range is quite diverse. This one is powerful and experimental, yet also a bit trancey and emotional. Nice blend of styles.

Rinzen – The Pursuit – This Never Happened

One of the singles from my album. “The Pursuit” is my attempt at making a film score for a science fiction film but in the world of melodic house and techno.

Sam Shure – Regency – Habitat

Sam Shure has been making some very forward-thinking music and this one is one of my favorite tracks from him. Always gets a crazy reaction when you play it live!

Anyma & Grimes – Welcome To The Opera (Adriatique Remix) – Afterlife

Was pleasantly surprised by the direction of this remix, with Adriatique leaning in a bit more into afro and creating something very euphoric out of this one.

Ivory – Yeah! – Exit Strategy

Delightfully weird yet still very functional, as is to be expected from Ivory. Great track!

Justice & Tame Impala – One Night/All Night

I’ve been sneaking this one into a couple sets when I can (which is no easy feat). Absolutely mega collab from Justice and Tame Impala. I love everything about it.

Rinzen – Astronauta – This Never Happened

Ending with my favourite song from my new album, “Astronauta.” It samples a Brazilian jazz song and features some really cosmic sound design. I can’t wait to drop it live on tour.
