Inspired by Kraftwerk at the age of ten to make wonderful music.
Underground Electronic music at it’s best.
You’re playing Newcastle’s ‘Shindig’ on Saturday, are you looking forward to playing this seminal north east dance club again?
“Yes, I´m returning after over a year and to honest with you, I cannot wait. The ‘Shindig’ people are one of my favourite crowds’ and I will never forget the two amazing nights I have had there already. I´m sure this night will be better.”
What big club’s and events have you enjoyed rocking recently?
“Oh, there’s really too many to mention. I did a world tour last year with night’s in Australia, America, Brazil, Mexico and Canada to name but a few. It´s always impressive how unique House music lovers are, no matter where they come from. I always talk about the universal language called House and Techno music and I´m very proud to be a part of this peaceful and powerful movement. Every party guest is a part of it.”
The last twelve months has been incredible for you. You’ve had some great productions and remixes – tell us a little about your latest single, ‘Talking All That Jazz’.
“I have moved to New York for a little while with my family and with my friend Dimitri Andreas who also releases records on my imprint Systematic Recordings. It has been an amazing and creative time and my last single ‘Talking All That Jazz’ has been produced here. Check out youtube.”
Your new single is a lot less electronic to some of your other productions, is there a certain level of influences from anyone that features heavily in your music at the moment?
“Well, I´m pretty much into Jazz which doesn’t mean that I love this kind of music exclusively. People who follow my output, know pretty well that you cannot put the name Romboy under one file like Tech House for example. I find it pretty boring to produce always the same genre of electronic music. I like to do sessions in many directions like Techno, House, Deep House or lately Jazz influenced House grooves. I think this is already a trademark of myself, ha ha.”
‘Shindig’ is celebrating their 18th Anniversary in May – can you remember what you were up to back in 1992?
“Oh my god, really? I didn´t know this. Wow, my congratulations for this outstanding club. Yes, back in 1992 I had started to release my own productions, together with friends – I released projects like Unknown Structure for example. One year later I founded my first label called Le Petit Prince together with Klaus Derichs. A wild and crazy period of time when the Love Parade in Berlin became big too. I stopped studying medicine for House music.”
How would you describe your sound at the moment to the clubbers on their way to ‘Shindig’?
“Simply, Tech House with soul.”
You have been working with some great artists, Robert Owens and Blake Baxter to name but two, what’s else is coming up?
“Both of them are true legends who I totally respect them as they have truly contributed their part in dance music. I have just finished some new tracks with my friend Chelonis R. Jones and also with Bajka, the girl who did sing on ‘Tides’, the big hit back in the day which Carl Craig remixed so wonderfully. But these tracks will be released next year, when my third album comes out.”
But before that on Systematic?
The next single will be a collaboration with my French friend Rodriguez Jr. A typical summer tune in the tradition of the goold old ‘Jaguar’ track on UR. I love this tune, it will be out by end of May. Later in the Autumn there will be, tatatataaaaaa, a brand new single with my superbuddy Bodzin.”
You just got back from Miami we hear?
Yes I´ve just got back from Miami, I played at Electric Pickle in February, a wonderful venue with great people. It was been their 1st Birthday, fantastic! As for WMC 2010, sorry, too much work!”
You’ve been producing music for well over a decade now, are there any new artists who are catching your eye at the moment?
“Yes, definitely. There are always new and young people which hit my heart as we say in Germany. Amazing people around now are definitely Stimming on Diynamic – also a new breed on Systematic Recordings, people like Ante Perry, Olivier Grégoire and Dimitri Andreas. Mainly people from Belgium. Stay tuned.”
