secretsundaze Volume 2 – Giles Smith & James Priestley presents
Number two in the superb CD series’ from one of the UK’s finest clubbing exports. Rocking our monging chops out in October, seven years has seen this brilliant London night shine the light for everything that’s unreal in house and techno. Sundays have never quite been the same since this duo took over, secretsundaze is always a crazy place to lose your marbles at and never find them. Ibiza has been a smasher for them this year hosting with German night ‘Monza’ at Privilge and at ‘Wonderland’ at Eden – they’ve also kicked the fucking shit out of The Rex in Paris, Basics with Mr Beer in Leeds, knocked the Sonar festival for six, Club 11 in Amsterdam and Distillery in Germany. Get in lads. Highlights on this double player include, courtesy of Giles, Mr G’s ‘Sometimes I Cry’ (Radio Slave remix) – a very bass heavy Mauriitzio inspired groove, the thirteen year old ‘Montanna Freight Train’ by Lawson, Finlow and Cappello and the classic ‘The Morning Factory’ by Ron Trent and Chez Damier. James as usual just raves on with some beautiful music – Holy Ghost Inc ‘Walk On Air’, Lindbaek & Lindstrom’s ‘Alien In My Pocket’, Guy Gerber’s ‘Disorientation’ Johnny D remix and Omar S’s ‘Psychotic Photosynthesis’ has had me dancing around the kitchen like a gerbil on acid.

C.S.S. hitting our shores
Though known in the US by their abbreviated tag of C.S.S., this dance n’ rock sextet are actually called Cansel de Ser Sexy – a Portuguese translation after a quip from the mighty Beyonce Knowles who once claimed to be “tired of being sexy”. The band formed in Sao Paulo (the worst city other than Coventry I have ever been to by the way) with such a cross section of people – vocalist Luisa Hanae Matsushita (who goes by the stage name Lovefoxxx), bassist Iracema Trevisan, guitarist Ana Rezende, and multi-instrumentalists Luiza Sa, Carolina Parra and Adriano Cintra – all brilliant. They self-released two EPs in 2004, Em Rotterdam Ja e uma Febre and A Onda Mortal/Uma Tarde com PJ and issued their self-titled full-length LP on TramaVirtual’s fledgling music label in 2005. There’s a new beat coming out of Brazil in the form of ‘Cansei de Ser Sexy’ (Portuguese for tired of being so sexy), and it’s bloody raucous. C.S.S. consists of six 20-something São Paulistas who are injecting some international exuberance into the Seattle-based Sub Pop label. The only inkling that the group hails from the Southern Hemisphere is the smattering of Brazilian-tinged Portuguese that peppers the album, along with a barely detectable accent in lead singer Lovefoxxx’s delivery. The C.S.S. sound is far from traditional folksy world music – rather, it’s a mishmash of ’80s new wave, electronica, danceable beats, and cheeky lyrics (which are just a little bit naughty). Think Berlin and Blondie – with a dash of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Muffin Spencer of Brassy. This largely female group (all women except the drummer) will have you running to the dance floor in your slouchy boots and skinny jeans faster than you can say “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above’–the first single from the album. So, The Leadmill in Sheffield October 10th, London’s Shepherds Bush Empire October 6th, Norwich’s Waterfront October 7th, The Manchester University October 10th, Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms October 13th, Bristol’s Thekla October 14th and Brighton’s October 15th prepare to party.
