Uppers
Syke’n’Sugarstarr

A name synonymous with pure house music. Since the late 90s, the duo has crafted a whole series of worldwide club hits as played by the likes of Pete Tong, David Guetta or Bob Sinclair.

They have released on leading imprints like  Ministry Of Sound, Positiva, Subliminal and Southern Fried and have toured from Miami to Sydney, from Hong Kong to Bogota and from London to Moscow, always providing DJ sets which combine the pair’s very own productions and exclusive edits, whilst they also head up a weekly radio show played to over 70 countries.

Mousse T, Armand Van Helden and Incognito are among the many artists to have called upon the services of Syke’n’Sugarstarr, able as they are to work anything from funky to percussive to electro house into their own style.

We caught up with them for more about the show, future work and the WMC…

How was Miami this year? Did you get much work done?

Miami was great for us again this year. Played at seven really cool venues over there. Also tested our new productions for the first time and they all worked excellent.

Any interesting new hook-ups production wise?

Yep. Have recently recorded a new track with Jay Sebag (Mr. “Rocking Music”), scheduled some more stuff with CeCe Rogers, as well as new releases with Cosmo Klein (our vocalist on our current track “My Belief”) . Not to forget a new one coming up soon with Alexandra Prince, called “So Alive”.

What were the big tunes for you?

Heard some tunes a couple of times.  Such as James Talk & Ridney “Forever” for example. New versions of “Pump up the Jam” and “Beachball” by Nalin & Kane. But I don’t think that there’s any particular big Miami Hit this year.

What was the best party do you think?

We played at Club 50 in Miami Downtown which is a rooftop-venue on the 50th level of the Viceroy Hotel. Unbelievable spot with a nice view over whole Miami. The event was sold out and ended up in a big party.

Can you tell us about your radio shows?

We host our 1-hour-radio-show “Do The Hip!” since one year now. A weekly show which is broadcasted exclusively on 45 stations and aired in more than 70 countries.

What sort of music do you play on them?

The music can be described as funky-electronic-vocal-house based on a solid percussive ground.  We usually start a show with a short warm-up which is more funky/vocal orientated. But after that we touch different styles of house-music, brand-new stuff combined with some rare biggies from our scene.

Are they all precorded or? How do you fit it in with djing and producing?

During the week we spend lots of time in our studio, working on new stuff. And from fridays until sundays we are on the road rocking the clubs. So most of the shows are prerecorded, as we cannot spin live on all the stations one time a week… 😉

What sort of thing do you look for in the tracks you play?

The groove. What ever we play instrumental or vocal stuff – it’s always the groove that kicks us.  And if we are kicked the people do feel the same… 😉

How much time do you spend preparing for the show each week/month?

While producing the weekly Radioshow I’m already selecting new tunes. During this process we also work on mashups and unique bootlegs which stay exclusive with us. A couple of hours before a show we go through the whole repertoire and pre-select tracks that we’d like to hammer that night.

Which do you prefer out of the three things, djing producing or radio shows?

To be honest – we love all of them. Producing new music is always special as you create something that lasts for eternity. Playing out your own music as a DJ and to see how the audience reacts is an indescribable experience. And – producing a radioshow and realizing that millions of people in the whole world can listen to your sound brings us goosebumps.

What else are you working on this year?

We’re currently focussing the production for our next singles as mentioned before. But finally targetting the release of our first real artist-album which is scheduled for autumn. As we don’t want to provide a simple dance-mix we take
our time to work accurately on every detail. You can expect an album which should surprise the listener who just knows us from housemusic…watch out.
