‘I Wake Up Screaming’ is the first new Kid Creole album in just over ten years and is a set of pretty feisty numbers – no resting on laurels here. In fact, although it’s clear he still has the funk and disco essentials at his fingertips, this is a pretty emotional ride for Creole and the band. The single release ‘I Do Believe’ is a strong statement of intent, while ‘Verily Verily Verily’ is also strong, while ‘Attitude’, probably the best song on the album, really packs a punch to go with its killer riff. The groove is well and truly present here, but so is the potential for fireworks brought about by the band dynamic, about which some of these songs are reportedly written. It all makes for a very strong return, and it’s good to have him back.
