On ‘Different Colours’ Marconi Union perfect the art of horizontal music that doesn’t seem to move that much – but actually has a lot going on behind the scenes. This is mood music, yes, but of a much higher quality than your average chill out, structured cleverly with soft timbres and beautifully weighted drums that are at times barely in existence. When they are used there are some clever manipulations of style, particularly on ‘Flying (In Crimson Skies’), which breaks in to a faster form of dub. When asked about making the album one half of the duo, Richard Talbot, remarked how ‘I think there’s something about the music that you can tell it’s been made by people who’ve been around the block a few times’. He’s right – but it’s a good thing in every way!
