Roll The Dice - In Dust

Roll The Dice – In Dust – (The Leaf Label)

Roll The Dice - In Dust‘In Dust’ brings forward a very different sound for Stockholm duo Roll The Dice, the polar opposite of last year’s debut album. While they continue to put their analogue equipment to excellent use, this time it’s for darker means, as if soundtracking a suspense film. Opener ‘Iron Bridge’ doesn’t have a tune as such, but sets the unsettling atmosphere, from which dark minimalist tracks emerge. ‘Idle Hands’ finds particularly effective use of the lower registers of the piano in this respect, while ‘The Skull Is Built Into The Tool’ deals with uneasy paranoia, and only partially settles it as it progresses. ‘Way Out’ and ‘See You Monday’ offer a bit more light at the end, with more upward looking chord progressions, following the blueprint the duo have of developing their source material into tightly woven webs of music. This is intriguing and a little unsettling, but it’s ultimately fulfilling music.
