Simon Grainger has made a rather beautiful album here, an extremely positive response to the effect of a long term serious illness. Rather than dwelling on the dark side, it looks at the way forward and how positive things can be, viewed through the form of some extremely well crafted and rather beautiful electronic pop songs. Grainger’s strengths lie in his originality, using quite unusual forms and chords to fuel songs that have clearly had some love poured into their lyrical output. The airy ‘Saturnine’ is an especially memorable song, but ‘Trainers’, ‘Shadowformerself’ and epic closing track ‘ColdTown’ also cast a lasting spell.
