As an indication of where New Zealand hip-hop is right now, ‘Magic City’ shows it to be in rude health, the jump-off ‘3,2,1’ firing out the trunk in homage to Joe Budden’s ‘Pump It Up’ and the Roc Raida face-off ‘Represent’ displaying Money’s know-how with a needle. Fair play also for pulling together the likes of Akon, Capone and Mystro, although generic, watch-and-copy production (chipmunk appearances, few thugged out surprises, the compulsory rock experiment), and middling guests haul this a few rungs down the ladder.
