Alpha Function – Il.Legacy – (Ampispazi Recordings)

Ampispazi Records is the Berlin based label ran by Mik Santaro, a man who evidently has his finger on the pulse when it comes to unleashing excellent electronic music on us. The label’s latest is a similarly excellent effort in that regard, as he introduces us to the sounds of Alpha Function, for whom the largely excellent Il. Legacy EP marks their first foray into the world of production. And as auspicious starts go, this one’s right up there.

Almost minimal in texture but still boasting its own creative vibe, the original is a taut and spine-tingling affair that speaks to the weirder and more hypnotic side of the dance music spectrum. At times it’s indicative of Ten Walls while at other times it leans towards Function territory – which perhaps tells you everything you need to know about its versatile nature. ‘Discordia’ is another excellent jam, with this one arguably even more epic in nature thanks to its many stirring overtones especially. Ramsi then tackles ‘Il. Legacy’ with some aplomb, leaving his own inimitable stamp on the track thanks to some clever chords especially, while it’s then left to Mik Santoro to finish the job with a lavish and brilliantly executed mix of Discordia. An Ep that’s hard to find fault with, Ampispazi’s latest rubbertstamps their reputation as a label of considerable clout.
