Art Department – Natural Selection – (No.19 Music)

The opening ‘Intro’ references the Human League’s very early synthesiser mastery amongst others circa 1978. And as you already know Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow aren’t a duo who shies away from the edgier side of electronics, so you will be happy to note this album delivers all of that and more with the aid of twisted synths and elevated emotions. The next track, ‘It’s Through’ then proceeds to push at the boundaries of melodic vocals, while ‘The Agent’ lets break-beats rip amid a wash of delicate atmosphere’s cementing the music’s strength by the third track alone. Featured vocals come from Aquarius Heaven plus Seth Troxler whose breathy tones work particularly well on ‘Cruel Intentions’. The remainder of Natural Selection defies an easy path as it navigates between the slightly sisnter moods of Crazy and the addictive electro pulses of ‘Walls’ via a number of ambience infused ‘Interludes’. All in all: a diverse album of sounds, tempo’s and lasting impressions.
