I like Malente’s No Brainer output, he consistently releases music that challenges and doesn’t piggyback on formats that are sales comfortable and entertainment light. This said, A.W.O.L. have most certainly achieved, adding a chart accessible string to No Brainer’s bow with the sublime, folk guitar strummed summer groove that is ‘Speaking to the Night’. Jape’s vocals are as soft as silk whilst the beats are as punchy as a sleepy yet petulant white rabbit that’s been picked up out of A.W.O.L’s magician’s hat against its will. ‘Crasher’ is a more dancefloor oriented, buzzing bassline groove and to close, the title track ‘See You’ is a swarming hive of reversed vocal loops and stroppy clicking beats. It’s definitely worth keeping A.W.O.L in your sights.
