Bibio – The Green EP – Warp

One of the warmest tracks from Bibio’s excellent ‘Silver Wilkinson’ LP gets its own single release, but being the productive chap that he is, Stephen Wilkinson has decided to raid his archives and turn it into a highly desirable EP of five songs. If you know Bibio’s output well you’ll know he is remarkably consistent where quality is concerned, but that he is also original in a lot of his musical thinking. So ‘Dye The Water Green’ is a great starting point, its vocal a bit reminiscent of The Cyrkle’s ‘It Doesn’t Matter Anymore’ but beautifully wistful at the same time. ‘Dinghy’ is a nice, carefree instrumental, while ‘Down To The Sound’ taps into Wilkinson’s obvious affinity with folk music, projected through a wider scope of sound. Then we have the woozy ‘Carbon Wulf’, an extended album outtake, and ‘The Spinney View of Hinkley Point’, where Bibio experiments with live drums for the first time, a nicely done track that brings a sense of the outdoors. As always with Bibio, there is never a dull moment – and this spring-like EP gives a good set of clues as to where his mind is musically at the moment.
