Culture Shock – City Lights – (Ram Records / Virgin EMI)

Yes – Freud is right. The repressed will always return. The release I feel listening to drum and bass in my days and nights spent hanging around Metalheadz, Speed, AWOL, Full Cycle, Fabric, Freq Nasty and all of that comes back in a hot second when I listen to good drum and bass and breaks. ‘City Lights’ sees Culture Shock ably delivering a llvely and rather lovely vocal drum and bass cut that could happily sit on the daytime radio playlist. Add a dark grimy, garage-y remix from Riddim Commission and Jakwob’s shimmering, atmospheric Bukem reminiscent (it’s the keys Jakwob honestly it’s just those Bukem keys) rewiring is nothing short of blissful. Those are the sort of beats I like to drop to. The future looks big and bright for City Lights.
