When I was 16 I had just about recovered from my O’Levels, knew which 6th form college I was going to and was underage raving like a madwoman. How things have changed for the youth of today. Today’s gifted 16 year old (not saying I was gifted but hey O’s and A’s aren’t just useful vowels in scrabble you know) anyway as I was saying today’s gifted 16 year okld signs a worldwide management and recording deal with one of the most important & influential independent electronic music labels in the world, Spinnin Deep. This is the case for young Curbi.
So what about the record that has caused all the fuss for one so young he still can’t appear or dj legally in clubs or perform in the daytime without a chaperone present? ‘Discharge’ is a bumping, old skool dark garage groove. It’s an infectious loop that makes you shake your shoulders, wiggle your butt and shake your money maker for all you’ve got. It’s one of those records that is so simple you think there should maybe be more to it but then there isn’t and that is the beauty of it. It works a treat on the dancefloor – could cross over to daytime radio with the right push or a little vocal somewhere. Whatever – Curbi and Spinnin Deep have discharged this lethal weapon in public – take cover until you are advised that it’s safe to come out again. Probably some time next year…
