One of the best tracks from New Yorker James Murphy’s mighty and acclaimed debut album gets singled out. LCD is truly a fresh sound, managing to wrench forward a lineage started in the 70s in New York punk and underground dance clubs, which would stretch through every artist from Patti Smith through ESG to the whole No New York mutant disco thing. It’s attitude, imagination and street groove – all here as James fantasies about Daft Punk doing a gig in his basement over a minimal bass-drum bedrock which recalls bands like Television and early Talking Heads. The flip’s Soulwax remix adds big electro riffs, drums and a grainy wall-of-noise feel which is in total sympathy.
