Billed as ‘a weird and wonderful trip into the mind of Mr Solomon’, this marvellous single trailers Luke’s upcoming album The Difference Engine, which is setting out to take the much-abused form of dance music album somewhere a bit deeper. Rather than cater to trends and sales sheets, the veteran DJ set out to reflect his personality and emotions plus a lifetime’s immersion in forward-thinking, melon-detonating electronic dance jusic from maverick pioneers like Arthur Russell onwards. I mention him because ‘The Darkest secret’ is adorned with a kind of alien cello tones as Luke speaks the words amidst a clicked-up future-funk groove. The effect is disembodied and provocative. The depth and darkness, along with the stringed instrument, made Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds flick up, which is no bad thing. Completed by minimal treatment for DJs, this one shit-hot taster for an album which can only be one of the mus year’s musical statements.
