Magik Johnson’s CV reads like a history of dance music, from the Hacienda through to Shaboom and beyond, he’s well known for his wonderfully deep house excisions, but he’s ventured towards the harder end of the spectrum for his latest release. ‘Malone’ is pure energy without ever being banging, electro-static charged drums driving the detuned keyboard riff as far as it can possibly go. The kind of dark intensity which will easily straddle the techno / house crossover. ‘Jump’ is a typically classy meander through swathes of tricky keyboard manoeuvres, perfect for those headphone / early hours moments, although that bass could do damage if allowed. Recommended.
