Mutiny UK – Hot Sake

I like Mutiny UK – have done since back in the day when they started their label Sunflower plus their track with Steve Mac ‘Feel The Pressure’ has been one of my Axtone released / EDM highlights of the year (it moonlights here as the downtempo ‘Never Let You Down’). But don’t go expecting any four to the floor house bangers as heavy rock-electro-pop seems to be the order of the day. The opening track ‘Slow Motion’ has a screaming rock guitar riffed intro then morphs into a Moroder-esque (and I am sure I hear Roxy Music in there too) heavy petting, slo-mo disco instrumental. It took me a couple of listens to get my head properly around the expanse of material – we are treated to 18 brooding, bottom end blazing tracks – all with the emphasis on analogue instruments, raw 80s synths and sounds and live performance that would sound as at home at London’s KOKO and The Scala as it would on your lappy. Highlights? The bleepy, arpeggiating ‘For Your Love’ ft Flute Hollywood tickled my neon soaked fancy. The Zero7 ish ‘Written In Your Eyes’ feat Stevie Smith also seduced my ears. It’s a patchwork of vocal / instrumental styles that whilst the risks may not always pay off it finishes well. ‘Hot Sake’ top and tails your listening experience with two beautiful Hendrix guitar infused downtempo grooves ‘Slow Motion’ and ‘Fuzzy Dream’ ft Amrit Rahi. It’s maybe not the Mutiny UK sound that OG’s like me would expect to hear but it is an ambitious and rather admirable project that takes risks and reaches out to new fans and followers with courage and skill.
