PAWSA – Phaneron – (Lost Records)

Since first coming on to our radar, UK producer Pawsa has consistently impressed with his clued-in house textures. This time, he rocks up on LOST Records for a slab of deep house wonder that’s both cultured but also built for peak-time floors. Entitled ‘Phaneron’, this is an EP that’s full of dexterous deep house class – and one that emphasizes the label’s standing as a purveyor of such quality hues. We’ll get on to the remix in a bit (which in itself is a most enjoyable and thoroughbred track), but really, all that’s best in this package lies in the originals. ‘The Ride’ is a suitably names and hypnotic tracks with sharp synth stabs and weaving piano keys and it’s a versatile tune that could well fit into the hands of Kerri Chandler et al. Unashamedly old-school in its outlook, it’s given a new re-rub by the always on-fire Okain, who handles it in true beats mode. Elsewhere, ‘Presence’ is full of canny percussive wares and swelling synths, whereas the drums and the beats combine with some elegance too, transporting the original to a more fervent and full-on place. Lastly, ‘Anxious’ is a discerning and tantalizing take on modern deep house. Once again, LOST’s latest is a real winner.
