Of all of the anthems and classic to bare the Larry Levan moniker, his quintessential sound and perfectionism was epitomised by one record in particular, this groundbreaking offering from 1982. The New York Citi Peech Boy were an electro-disco collective that comprised Michael de Benedictus (a synthesiser player who often jammed alongside Levan in the DJ booth at The Garage), vocalist Bernard Fowler and guitarist Robert Kasper. Levan took a whole year to complete the final mixdown, but the end result matched Fowler’s absorbing acapella vocal cries with crisp hi-hat claps and made the song one of the most endearing and over-sampled records in dance music’s history. 25 years on and fellow New Yorkers Davidson Ospina and Oscar Poche add a soulful undercarriage to Fowler’s timeless cries to rewrite history.
