Every time a record appears bearing the name of Robert Owens I repeat myself with no shame – the man is not only the greatest vocalist to come out of house but today’s best modern soul singer. It’s been that way for over 20 years now and he’s still criminally under-rated. And not because of the company he keeps. The Coldcut team up for ‘Walk A Mile’ was monolithic. This coupling to launch Classic titan Rob Mello’s new Disco 45 imprint is magnificent. Over a spaced groove driven by a lone cowbell, it gives Robert a bed on which to vent the most passionate voice in dance music. As the backing gains riff-packed steam, so does Robert with heart-stopping effect. There’s also a deep and moody dub and an optimistic radio edit. There’s more good news: Robert is working with Fingers Inc comrade Larry Heard again and this track will be on his upcoming solo album. Surely his time has come now.
