Santa Maradonna FC Ft. Lucy Spraggan – Give Me Sunshine – (Brockwild Records)

If you like forward thinking music with vague undertones of the Stranglers’ ‘Golden Brown’ and similarities to Kate Tempest, sand dancing to sun drenched house and stretching your brain muscles by listening and learning lyrics ‘Give Me Sunshine’ is most definitely for you. Lucy Spraggan (the glorious ‘I’m happy, I just look sad’ X Factor find strangely unknown to Santa Maradona’s engineer) keeps Spada’s hooky folk guitar and penny whistle driven original bouncing with her sharp observations and ‘give me sunshine and I’ll waste my time’ lyrical heat. Joyce Muniz pushes the tempo, beefs up the kick, reverbs the percussion, adds a rubbery, bouncy castle bottom end and a rave synth breakdown that gives it an even all over tan. Niklas Ibach drops the key an octave or two, makes Lucy sound like Luke and swings it on a low slung hammock and live arrangement for a barefoot country hoe-down in a freshly mown field. Finally, Ruben Mandolini creates an intense whomp and boom-tsk, infinitely looped, clipped and stuttered reduction that runs like a fast train through picturesque countryside. It’s a hit record if it gets the right radio support.
