SONNY J
CAN’T STOP MOVING
STATESIDE

Making his solo debut on Glasgow’s fine Seventh Sign label is Gary Hamilton
from Mellow Sub Machine, a Sub Club-spawned collective responsible for
2005’s ‘Los Machinos Mellos’ on Gdansk [Hence the name]. ‘Gyal Flex’ rides a
bottomless lope wrapped in pads and atmospherics to whip up a vibe recalling
early Strictly Rhythm or the even deeper early 90s NY house, toughening up
as it motors on into delirious early hours oblivion. The flip’s ‘Left Then
Up’ is deep tech-house of the highest order, building an intoxicating web of
melodies and dubwise efx. Rotterdam duo Chris Callahan and John Matze, aka
Duplex, then lend their trademark classic Detroit-style soulfulness with old
school bassline, organ stabs and strings. This label always manages to tap
into that original soul when it didn’t matter whether it was called house or
techno, but this is one of its peaks.
