SUMO (aka Combo and Alf Tumble) have been writing and recording together since 1999, yet whilst never pigeonholing their sound to a specific beat, they have gone on to fashion a handful of acclaimed releases that boarder on Afro, jazz, disco and Latin rhythms. ‘Nini’ is very much in keeping with what’s gone before – working an Afrocentric vocal over an almost Moroder-esque ‘70s disco groove, complete with authentic sounding string stabs and basslines. The song features Sweden’s rising soul star, Clarisse Muvemba, who sings in her native Kongo language Lingala, providing delicious warm harmonies that fire up the soul, not least in Claude Monnet’s quintessentially French-sounding disco mix.
