The Hue – Criss Cross EP – (Classic Music Company)

Formally available on vinyl but now this rich collection of diverse mixes receives a full digital release all of their own. If you’re not already acquainted then The Hue are JT Donaldson and Tim Kvasnosky. Their music in this case sounds soulfully charged with a Jazzy edge that harks back to those classic eighties pre House records, yet somehow sounds all the more rewarding for it. ‘The Calling’ is first off and fits the previous prescription down to a T. Remixes come from Eddie C who beefs up the percussion and bass with additional piano adding extra fizz. Plus from Luke Solomon who gives the production a welcome bite reworking the arrangement with fresh keys. The remaining tracks then proceed to work through their influences with the spacey, ‘Spaced Out’ and funky basslines of ‘Watch Out both feeling particularly fine. The excellent, soaring Jazzy freestyle of final original ‘Fata Morgana’ witnesses exhilarating Horns alongside electric keys paying homage to the genre that never fades in significance, and is accompanied by a sassy four on the floor remix care off Leonel.
