The world has been a greyer place since Underworld diminished their profile but now comes a handy 3-CD promo pack of new remixes and it’s all gone technicolour again! Hand-picked remixers were asked to choose elements from three 25-minute downloads from the ‘River Run’ project and do their thing. This will become available along with original stuff on five limited edition twelves. the results are uniformly stunning and startlingly innovative. Space rez Paul Woolford injects ‘Jal To Tokyo’ with a swinging, electro-tickled funk, with vocal version and a dub which perfectly invoke that rising euphoria unique to Underworld. Buick Project throw potently deep Detroit flavours into their two takes on ‘Play Pig’. Sven Vath proteges Pig & Dan take the same tune and its basso vocal lines, lacing it with growling resonance and haunting melody. ‘Peggy Sussed’is given an ethereal workout by Robag Wruhme before Pete Heller fires up the big room demolition derby, one with vocal and a second ram-raied by chattering electro riffs. Martinez spaces ‘Vanilla monkey’ into minimal pulserama before High Society add electro boom and Prodigy stabs to ‘Lenny Penne’. Electronic dance music’s new developments fit Underworld like a glove. They, as usual, boot them into the stratosphere with kindred spirits. Once again, Underworld have sealed the current state of cutting edge dance music in a time capsule.
