Juno

So far Juno’s tenth anniversary series of house music classics given modern treatments has been superlatively great, some even matching the timeless originals while taking them into new dimensions. It’s worked well on instrumental tracks like Faze Action’s ‘In The Trees’ but care should be exercised when dealing with a track like Roland Clark’s 1991 anthem which rocked anywhere from the Hacienda to Venus with its magical web of Clark’s heartfelt vocals and harmonies over that unmistakable riff and killer drum programming. The remixes had to be extra-special and are strong enough pursuing their creators’ personal visions. Jay Shepheard contributes two mixes, both using just snatches of vocal, adding electro riffs and cooking up a lovely warm vibe, especially on the dub. Karizma from the Basement Boys starts with the vocal, stark and almost acapella with percussion, building into a funky latin-tinged groove, the final minutes of the track’s twelve going out as a jazzy instrumental workout. His other mix rides electro-breaks with not much vocal. These are modern remixes for modern times and will win over an entirely new generation who never experienced the original. Quite right too but those old fuckers who lost it to the ’91 version will relish the prospect of wallowing in that again too.
