It’s easy to see why DJ Andy Smith described Smoove & Turrell as the future of soul music, as they manage to bring it into context with modern break beats and no little funk. ‘Antique Soul’ is the sort of feel good long player that Jalapeno do so well, and to be honest any one of these tracks would serve well as singles. Particularly satisfying, mind, are the insanely catchy ‘I Can’t Give You Up’, which keeps its claws in for the rest of the day due to its nagging melody, or the hook-laden ‘You Got Me Bad’. Throughout the pair show good invention with the orchestration side of things, too – the parping baritone saxophones that add a nice rough edge to ‘Hammond’ a case in point. An excellent album that ushers summer in as soon as it’s played on the stereo – it gives no reason for Jalapeno devotees to wait any longer.
