Woz – Early Morning Champagne ft Joel Compass – Black Butter

Here’s a little gem courtesy of Black Butter: original home to Rudimental and Syron, still home to Kidnap Kid, Gorgon City and a fair few class acts besides and surely one of the most consistent and refreshing new independent UK record labels to have emerged in the last few years. The original version is reminiscent in places of early MJ Cole, with Joel’s soulful falsetto laid over a soft garage kick and ticklish hi-hats. Then the bassline drops and it’s all for one and one for all as the shufflers on the floor go gorilla. Adelaide mix takes it further downtempo for a back room or end of set throwdown that keeps the groove going until the last coat is collected. Check the Komon remix if you like your deep house to burble and bang harder and darker. Then the sneaky bonus ‘Keep’ scratches my club itch perfectly showcasing, as it does, Woz’s love of early rave breaks and beats and all things wrong and wonky. Expect big things because Woz is an IS – ain’t no doubt about that.
