When Dieter Moebius died in July 2015 modern electronic music lost one of its true founding fathers. This release is in effect a tribute to his legacy, as the Berliner Jonas Förster has completed the music he wrote for the Fritz Lang silent film ‘Metropolis’. It is cast in four lengthy tracks, and the imprints of Moebius are immediately recognisable in the combination of mechanical workings and short, intimate loops that characterise ‘Schicht’. A woozy motif in ‘Tiefenbahnen’ combines with atmospheric chimes and white noise, while ‘Mittler’ is more sharply focussed with its bright percussive sounds. The biggest complement you can pay to Förster is that it is truly difficult to spot where Moebius’ work stops and his begins – for this is a darkly rendered, atmospheric piece of work that stands resolutely on its own.
