Just as the Mode are about to release a new Best Of (and a whole lot of fresh remixes of their biggest hits to go with it), turns up this new single. A typical DM mood, ‘Martyr’ has got Dave Gahan pushing his vocals and tone to extremes; yep this is yet another song of angst and frustration willing to ease the anger. As much as initially coming across as a slightly surprising choice (not cool enough?), Paul Van Dyk was well suited to take on this remix job (and certainly popular enough), having always admitted being fanatical about eighties indie-pop. Handing out several similar mixes, a radio edit, a couple of epic vocal versions and a pumping dub, PVD opts for a vibey prog-house tip full of catchy synth hooks; the wide nostalgic pads bringing a softer, more melancholic feel to the song.
