The title New Spirit says it all – this is something of a rebirth for Australian trio PVT, as they reach their fifth album. It’s their most personal set of songs yet, speaking from deep personal experience but also outlining their hopes and fears for their native Australia as it stands now. Murder Mall is arguably the stand-out here, a genuinely chilling track that sends a shiver down the spine in totally the wrong way as it tells its grisly tale. More rewarding in an optimistic sense are the brilliant Kangaroo, which has a real spring in its step, and Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend, which lies in wait before cutting loose. The title track shows how well PVT can still write for the dancefloor but here they back up their obvious electronic clout with songs of impressive reach, making New Spirit arguably the best of their five albums yet.
