Rafael Yapudjian ‘The Power/Funky Train’ (TROPICAL DISCO)

We all know the intense release schedule of prime UK Disco label Tropical Disco and normally with such a schedule it can happen that the quality of output drops over the years. This is certainly not the case here, the label continues to deliver the goods and when a record is actually released by them, you can be sure of a very high quality standard provided. This is of course also the case with the new double A side by Rafael Yapudjian, hailing from Sao Paulo/Brazil. He is certainly a special talent, his releases ooze Soul, Funk and Disco and he always has a very musical attitude to all his tracks. What you won’t get with him are boring, monotone tracks without melodies, what you can expect on the other side are journeys into the glory times of funkiness-the late 70s transferred into the here and now. ‘Funky Train’ is a percussion heavy piece of housey Disco that is powered by huge brass and cool vocals. ‘The Power’ is my personal pic, a midtempo groover of the highest order. A superb funky backing works perfectly alongside great piano solos and strings, some clever filtering is added on top. This is a man to watch, kudos to Tropical Disco to give him the attention he deserves.
