These days the term deep is used to describe anything with a bit of resonance and subtlety and, although often a key to magic, can even throw up its own set of clichés. So now the secret is for the artist to inject the inner reaches of their character and soul into the music, accentuating the mood and heartbeat while packing a bottomless wallop for the dance floor. Jim Rivers manages this with knobs on for the long-running Bristol label, creating an amazing set which indeed runs his own personal vistas of deepness. ‘By Any Means’ evokes the spirit of early Nu Groove/Strictly Rhythm with fingerclicks, piano stabs and ethereal layers. Luna City Express then hot-wire the track with acid and hovering alienh resonance before Bristol’s Paul Loraine goes for a warm, house throbbed. ‘Forget About It’ boasts a gorgeously melodic bassline and textures, given a rattling tech-house kneesup by Supernature’s Pedramovich. Fabulous package.
