THIEVERY CORPORATION – THE TEMPLE OF I & I – ESL MUSIC

The return of Thievery Corporation is like having an old friend return with a reassuring arm around your shoulders. The Washington DC duo have notched up two decades of relaxed yet meaningful grooves, and continue here with a set of tracks that transcend culture. As the band’s Eric Hilton explains, ‘humanity transcends tribe and culture’, and how welcome to hear those sentiments than the other ones we’ve heard from Washington DC of late! ‘The Temple Of I & I’ is inspired by a long acquaintance with Port Antonio in Jamaica, and it exudes warmth, sunshine and good vibes. That said there is a bit of an edge to tracks like the excellent single ‘Ghetto Matrix’, where Boston vocalist Mr. Lif duels with rich horns. ‘Love Has No Heart’ makes the pointed observation ‘be careful what you wish for’ in a reflective mood, while other songs such as ‘Lose To Find’ and ‘Time + Space’ are good examples of the duo’s meaningful craft. The fluttering strings at the end of ‘Weapons of Distraction’ show their ability to paint orchestral colours, which is another element of a richly rewarding album. Great to have them back – and make sure you catch them live if you haven’t already!
