The press release has it about right, for once – James Pants appears to have been listening to some Krautrock in his Colorado basement. There are strong elements of this influence in the boomy textures that resemble early shoegaze, while synths and distortion drive tracks such as ‘A Little Bit Closer’. The music is largely instrumental and driven by riffs, with less of the low slung disco that characterised his first album for Stonesthrow and more punch, funk and even a bit of rock. What he has managed to do, though, is mould these influences with a hand that is recognisably his own, building on the promise of 2008’s ‘Welcome’ album with something more substantial.
