Paul Kalkbrenner is an experienced soundsmith, but not a man to rest on his laurels – and he is now part of the burgeoning techno family that Rough Trade are beginning to employ. ‘Icke Weider’ is similar to his previous albums in the way it expertly moves between speeds and types of beat, but once again he shows threads of originality in his approach, bringing everything together as a cohesive whole. Those who like their Kalkbrenner full-bodied will be pleased with the rolling beats of ‘Gutes Nitzwerk’, though the big guns really come out for the final number ‘Der Breuzen’, which is a cracker. Elsewhere there’s more of a chance to kick back, though this being Kalkbrenner things are expertly structured, with a pleasing sense of ebb and flow in each track. Pretty much business as usual, but in a very solid way.
