Miami 2012 – Nicky Romero

Buzz No. 1, what a Miami on it’s way

We know that the WMC is more about profile and the party rather than business deals, is it the most important date on the dance calendar still?

“To be perfectly honest, this will be my second time attending WMC, but from where I can judge it is still a pretty big happening. I think the fact that everybody is there and there are soooo many events, parties and gatherings it stays a very important conference. I really enjoyed being out there last year, meeting loads of people and seeing some great shows!”

As thousands of next generation clubbers descend on the big events, do you feel the spirit of house music is being lost to a crowd looking for that instant anthem hit?

“No not really, the shelf life of tracks is reduced in period of time to my opinion because we have such an active market on the consumer and producer side. There is so much music out there and due to the internet, social media and the ability people have to do instant on the spot reports of music being played the quest for new music and the thereby created hype mechanism makes for a faster turn around  when it comes to tracks being anthemic. Loads do get to this status but loads don’t either. I think with new times new ways to look at things come a long.”

Have you had to change your musical direction in the last year?

“No I try to vary what I do but there is not really such a thing of having to change my musical direction. I make what I want to and it flows from inspiration, I don’t produce towards trends or anything like that.

Is Miami losing it’s trademark cool and sexy house music vibe?

“Well I’d say no, at least I find Miami to be one of the sexiest places period lol.”

What are your thoughts on the Dennis Ferrer ‘Mansion’ Miami club story – he was basically kicked off the decks for not playing commercial enough…

“I think it has to do with the promoter needing to look a little further than that hit record that is hot at that moment and really book someone on the basis of research and love for music, not trying to be offensive or anything I can understand that if expectations are not met it creates a problem on the spot, but kicking someone off the decks is rude to my opinion. A DJ should be able to play what he wants and receive respect for what he does.  For the record I think Dennis Ferrer is awesome!”

With clubs and charts being dominated by dance music worldwide, shouldn’t we be rejoicing it’s success rather than being bitter with crossover?

“I totally agree, the development in EDM specially in the US in the moment is something I see as a very positive thing.”

The party you looking forward to the most?

“I am really looking forward to Ultra but just as much to all the other gigs I am doing!

What are your thoughts on the IMS in Ibiza? Will you be attending?

“I don’t know, I obviously like the initiative and fully support IMS but I need all the time in the studio I can get at the moment – so I am not sure yet.”
