Twin Shadow – ‘Confess’ – (4Ad)

A lot of performers like to indulge their love of Prince – and Twin Shadow, aka George Lewis Jr, joins the ever-growing list on his new album ‘Confess’. There is a fine line between copying your heroes and using their influence for good though, and thankfully he goes for the latter on an album that drips with soul and funk. The voice helps a lot, but so do the cavernous, rolling beats that give the Twin Shadow sound a hitherto undiscovered weight and depth. ‘Five Seconds’ is an anthem in waiting, but in truth there are a number of those here – ‘Golden Light’, the big synth tune ‘Patient’ and the gradual builders ‘I Don’t Care’ and ‘Be Mine Tonight’. All are evidence of an artist finding strength and confidence in his music, which he projects with considerable emotional force.
