Atlas Sound – ‘Parallax’ – (4Ad)

Atlas Sound - ParallaxAtlas Sound is Bradford Cox’s solo project – he of the Atlanta band Deerhunter. Its approach in the past has been a free and flexible one, with Cox writing songs that sometimes evolve into structured affairs, but other times stand as musical sketches, added to by his way with electronic sounds. ‘Parallax’ is in some ways more conventional, in the way it uses straighter pop-based songwriting, but there is still enough off kilter here to give the album its edge. Songs like ‘The Shakes’ and ‘Mona Lisa’ are beautifully crafted songs, while the subtle sonic manipulations to ‘Flagstaff’ and the busy piano lines of ‘Te Amo’ also provide highlights. Cox’s yearning voice tops off an album that glitters in the half light.
