Nolan – Freak On EP – Gruuv

Despite only launching back in 2010 Audiojack’s Gruuv imprint have already clocked up some nineteen releases. This latest from uber producer Nolan develops an uncomplicated theme of thumping beats, pounding bass, and scat like vocals providing a keen touch of melody, however it’s really down to the old-school stabs to truly lift ‘Freak On’ skyward. Kyodai’s remix then completely transforms it by taking the jazzy aspect of the vocal and applying appropriate swing to the drums, adding fiery piano, and even muted Trumpet to their unexpected opus. Second original ‘Bitter Sweat’ again plays with classic stabs, this time with a familiar feel to the rhythm section that should find its feet firmly on any dancefloor. John Tejada’s Remix gives it all extra punch while reworking the stabs, and then concludes by getting freaky with Acid styled tweaks.
