Ulrich Schnauss – A Long Way To Fall – Scripted Realities

Ulrich Schnauss remains a master of sound, if his fourth album ‘A Long Way To Fall’ is anything to go by. Schnauss has a totally unique and unhurried way of making the listener feel like they are swimming in a vast sonic ocean, and this album only adds to that effect if heard on headphones. Slowly shifting melodies, harmonies and textures run in an orbit that never seems to get dull, for Schnauss has an instinct of when to move things forward. The dark, intense swirls of ‘I Take Comfort In Your Ignorance’ and the soothing waves of ‘A Forgotten Birthday’ are especially notable, while elsewhere the sound is more electronic than Schnauss has previously achieved – but still as close and personal. Another small hours treat from the Berlin producer, who we should definitely not take for granted.
